Projects are on-going at the Deanery. They are a wonderful place to share or learn new skills and meet new friends. Gardening, trail-building, cooking, tree planting, tree nursery tending, marketing, building renovations, and assisting with programs are all areas to bring your skills, interests and energy!
Become a Member
Become a member of The Deanery Project and become an active participant in one of the Eastern Shore’s most innovative and interesting organizations.
It’s rare you can find one organization that’s working on such a wide range of projects, many of them among the first of their kind in Nova Scotia. In addition to the inherent beauty of the site’s saltwater beach and 25 acres of forest, there’s always something going on that will enlarge your understanding of how we can strengthen the health and economic security of our communities while protecting the environment.
The most powerful way you can support The Deanery Project is to sign up for our monthly donation program. By making a monthly pledge of, for example, $10 per month, you will provide us with $120 a year toward our important programs. A monthly pledge helps us to forecast and manage our budget more efficiently so that we can fulfil our role more effectively.
You can also purchase a membership for $25 annually, which will enable you to vote at our AGM, and receive discounted prices for select events and workshops.
Volunteering at The Deanery Project is a great opportunity to learn about and do new things, acquire new skills, and then to go home with that sense of belonging that comes from being engaged in your community.
We have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for you to choose from. You decide how much time you have available, what skill set you can offer, what new skills you’d like to learn, and what activities appeal to you, and we can make a plan to make it happen.
Work parties, internships, fundraising, assisting at special events and getting involved with a committee or the board are some of the many ways to be a part of the organization and its activities.
Regular work parties are held several times a month at the Deanery Project. Currently these are focused on renovations using natural building techniques; low-impact forest trail building; community gardens construction; and development of our native species nursery.
Longer term WOOFer-like learning opportunities are available for those interested in getting involved in day to day operations and special projects for 2 week to 4 month terms. On site accommodation and meal options are available.
Do you have a talent or interest in grass roots fundraising? Creative events and community outreach will help us achieve our goal of being a self sustaining employment generator on the Eastern Shore.
Assisting at Special Events
Over the course of the year special events from festivals to fundraisers need extra hands for planning, hosting, set-up and take down.
Board and Committees
Our board and committees are the heart of work unfolding at the Deanery Project. The board meets monthly, in the evening, and meetings are open to all members of The Deanery Project. Our members come from across the province. Board members are elected for two year (renewable) terms. If you are interested in serving on the board, becoming a member or getting involved in one of our committees (programming, building, membership, communication, please contact us.
We welcome donations of all kinds from tools and building supplies to musical instruments, perennial plants and trees, art supplies, cooking gear and other equipment to help with our programs and improving our space.
Artist in Residence Program
Our emerging artist in residence program is inviting applications by artists for residencies in our new studio space. They will have the opportunity to live and work in a place of extraordinary beauty surrounded by people passionate about community, art and the environment.
