Join Our New Coastal Monitoring Team!

The Deanery is excited to announce that we are apart of the Eastern Shore Citizen Science Coastal Monitoring Network (ESCOM)! 🥳🌊

What is it?

In 2024 the Eastern Shore became the focus of a coastline monitoring project led by geographer Dr. Camilo Botero. The successful project focused research activities in communities from Sheet Harbour to Moser River. 2025 has seen the Project expand with support from Dalhousie University and is now known as the Eastern Shore Citizen Science Coastal Monitoring Network (ESCOM)!

The Deanery has offered to be one of several new monitoring sites on the Eastern Shore where neighbours become citizen scientists providing documentation of coastal changes which in turn become part of global efforts to monitor changes in our oceanscapes.

Why get involved?

1. An opportunity to join with community members to contribute to citizen science research data that helps support adaptation efforts in the face of coastal erosion and sea level rise.

2. Possibilities to establish a coastal monitoring site on your own property, or elsewhere on the Shore! It is amazing how accessible and non-invasive the measurement technology is in materials and its use. Check out the photo of Deanery staff trying it out on-site!

What is the commitment?

A team of 3-5 people meet for an hour at the Deanery once a month to gather a set of sea level data. Date is variable depending on the weather and tidal cycle. The pool of people being drawn from can be much larger than 5 which would reduce the time commitment to every other month etc.

Information is collected using easy to use measuring materials, which team members will be trained on! This is an activity suitable for all ages. Mobility is important in being able to walk to the waterfront. See the image below for an idea of the equipment we’ll be using– tested by Breena & I this past Fall!

Want to learn more?

Join our all-ages Information Session Saturday, March 15th from 10AM to 11:30AM! This will also be an opportunity to meet likeminded community members and meet the lead geographer of the project, Dr. Camilo Botero!

Stick around for a full day at the Deanery for a vegetarian community lunch at 12:30PM and our Birch & Maple Tree Tapping Workshop happening from 1:30PM to 4PM!
