The harmony workshops of instructor, Betty Belmore, are focused on the simple pleasure of singing together and learning by ear. No experience is necessary as people from all levels are encouraged to explore the basics of harmony, from the sweet and predictable to hair-raising chords and discords, in a safe, supportive environment.
The repertoire is taken from a diverse songbook of old country, blues, folk, contemporary, doo wop, swing and 19th century parlour songs. Easy and fun exercises incorporate elements of syncopation and rhythm from gospel and the improvisation and ‘call and response’ of field songs and sea shanties. The workshops are designed to give you the background to help blaze your own trail and improvise your own harmonies.
The joy of singing in harmony is all about listening to one another, raising your spirits and lowering your stress. In a world of increasing technology, our oral tradition is one natural resource we must take care to nurture and preserve.
