The Deanery Project is honoured to be hosting the , Saturday, November 16th from 1:30 – 4:00 in Lower Ship Harbour. This powerful program is open to anyone wanting to explore Indigenous relationships and a history that Canadians are rarely taught. It is particularly valuable for staff, boards and volunteers working in our communities.
During the interactive exercise blankets are used to represent the lands, of what is now known as Canada, and the distinct cultures and nations that live on those lands to this day. A Narrator interacts with the participants who are given short parts to read in response to a script that was developed with the Aboriginal Rights Coalition with Indigenous elders and teachers. The exercise goes through the history of treaty-making, colonization, and resistance resulting in the nation we call Canada. It is followed by a Talking Circle, the program may raise deep emotions and participants are encouraged to work with their head, heart and spirit while participating.
The Blanket Exercise will be lead by Elder Billy Lewis, Mary Rigby and Chris White (TBC). Light refreshments will be served. Free will donations to the program are welcomed.
